ABOUT

award-winning author carol rhees

I’ve wanted to write a novel for as long as I can remember. It just took me four careers and a pandemic to finally do it.

None of those years were a detour. They gave me the people, experiences, and stories that now find their way into my novels. Never one to sit still for long, I have been a partner at a large law firm, a law professor, and—after one spectacular mid-life crisis—a history teacher at the Maret School in Washington, DC. In addition, more than 20 years ago, I founded Hope for Children Fund, a nonprofit that partners with community organizations in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to help children living in extreme poverty. Along the way, refugees and their families have lived in our basement for years. And most importantly, I married my husband and raised three incredible children.

When I write, I disappear completely into the world and the characters I'm creating. I love letting my imagination run wild as unexpected connections and subplots emerge. That's one of the great joys of writing for me. The best days are the ones when my characters surprise me. If my novels make you laugh, cry, argue with a character, or stay up far too late turning pages, I will have done my job.

When I’m not writing, you will find me laughing with my grandchildren; playing golf, bridge and mahjong with my friends (I never would have believed this!); finding ways to get the heck out of DC in the winter; and ordering dinner on DoorDash.
